President Donald Trump has returned the admiration Nicki Minaj has shown him over the past year, showering the rapper with compliments during a Republican campaign rally in Michigan on Sunday, October 25.
Minaj, 43, accompanied Trump aboard Air Force One as they traveled to the border city of Port Huron, where the president appeared alongside Republican candidates seeking to strengthen the party’s position ahead of the midterm elections. The rally featured former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, who is running against Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, and Rep. John James, who is challenging Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in the race to succeed Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
During his nearly two-hour appearance, Trump made a series of personal remarks about Minaj, praising her appearance and popularity while acknowledging her growing support for his administration.
Trump Praises Nicki Minaj’s ‘Beautiful Butt’ During Rally
Trump’s comments came while he was addressing coverage of his previous remarks about appreciating the appearance of Sen. Jon Husted, a Republican from Ohio. The president argued that reports had overlooked Husted’s background as a football player and said his earlier comments had been made “in fun.”
“I’ve never done that with a man before. Off the record, women? Yes. Men? No,” Trump said. “By the way, I looked at one hell of a beautiful a– before: Nicki Minaj.”
Referring to the “Pink Friday” artist, Trump added, “That’s hard to miss,” before encouraging her to stand up in front of the audience.
“Stand up! That’s hard to miss.”
Minaj stood and waved to the crowd as Trump continued his remarks.
“I hope Nicki wasn’t insulted, but we love Nicki. She’s been with us for a long time,” the president said.
Trump returned to the subject later in the evening, complimenting the rapper after she delivered a speech supporting Republican candidates.
“She never looked more beautiful,” he said, adding, “She is a very special person. She gets it, smart.”
Trump Jokes About Being Overshadowed by the Rapper
As Trump introduced Minaj to the audience as the “queen of rap,” he joked that her presence was drawing attention away from him.
“You know, I don’t like being overshadowed, and this woman overshadows me, and I’m angry about it. They’re going crazy over her.”
Minaj took the stage and opened her remarks by encouraging the audience to join her in expressing support for the president.
“We love Trump,” she led the crowd in chanting.
In her roughly two-minute speech, the rapper urged Michigan residents to participate in the political movement supporting the president, describing the moment as significant for the country’s future.
She encouraged Michiganders to “be a leader in this movement that’s happening right now” during “a major turning point for our country.”
Minaj also expressed opposition to gender-affirming care for transgender children, adding another socially conservative position to her public political messaging.
Nicki Minaj’s Growing Alignment With Trump
Minaj’s appearance in Michigan reflects a significant shift from her earlier criticism of Trump’s immigration policies during his first term. In his second term, the rapper has increasingly associated herself with the president and the Republican Party, appearing at several events connected to his administration.
Her previous appearances have included the U.S. Treasury Department’s “Trump Accounts” summit and a luncheon in the White House Rose Garden.
Trump has also previously joked about Minaj in connection with the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner. Three months before the Michigan rally, he made a remark about the rapper “twerking” at the rescheduled dinner, referring to attendees who had “yelled, ‘Get down!'” when a gunman allegedly opened fire outside the room during the originally scheduled event on April 25.
